Dutch Oven Cooking Class

Today we went to a class put on by the Missouri Conservation Department.

It was fabulous… and delicious πŸ˜‹

It was all about how to cook with a Dutch oven!

We began our class with lots of important rules and instructions…

Be safe… Don’t enter the cooking circle!

(I want a cooking circle! I like how we cooked with charcoal briquettes.)

We learned how to heat the briquettes.

… then it was time to get cooking…

The boys made Cheesy Bread

  • They made the recipe in a seperate bowl
  • The Dutch oven was lined with parchment paper (for easy clean-up)
  • The dough was poured into the Dutch oven
  • Hot charcoal was put under and on top of the Dutch Oven
  • The bread baked for about 40 minutes… Every 15 minutes the lid and the pot was turned to ensure even heating

Finished Yummy Cheesy Bread

Simone and her cousin assisted in making Upside Down Pineapple Cake.

The cake was sooooo delicious!!

One group made a child-friendly chili!

Eli had 2 bowls!!

I loved the spaghetti!

The kids also learned how to make Toads in the Hole on a metal coffee tin.

There was a pizza-box solar oven (too cloudy today to really work).

I can’t wait to go camping again and actually know how to cook!!

I’m so excited 😊

We are planning our first rough it camping trip this year! I’m super excited to see how it goes with 6 of our 7 kiddos I’m sure they’ll have a blast It’s been years since we’ve gone camping. I’m eager to learn how to cook over an open fire and taste my hand at some outdoor living!

    • Best of luck… We just cabin camp- although as the kids get older, I would love to tent camp! Our biggest dilemma is food, my youngest is gluten free which complicates meal planning- but I’m slowly learning! I can’t wait to hear about your camping trip and find out what you cooked and brought with you!

  5. I LOVE my cast iron dutch oven! My juiciest, most tender chicken comes out of my dutch oven. We got it a few years ago when we went camping in Maine, and it’s been my best cooking friend ever since. I’ve never made bread in it though. I will have to try that.
