Yes! Since we switched, the kids love math again! They enjoy learning new concepts and will fill their papers with fractions and equations because they see math as magical instead of work and drudgery!

Yep, we actually have been using my daughter’s 4-H stuff as “math”. It’s great. She is required to keep track of all her 4-H animals need, expenses, etc. We turn it into “math” and it’s fun and PRACTICAL. She can really see how it relates to life.

I had a week of homeschooling two grandchildren not long ago and this is similar to what we did: Looked in all the places spare change was deposited (that kitchen draw, book shelves, bowls, my gardening jacket…), collected it up, counted it and bagged it into 1ps, 2ps etc. made records on paper, divided it up, went out to the bank… and of course spent it (over thirty quid just laying around the house in strange places). 😀

It’s always nice to find hidden money… and then go spend it! It’s such a natural way to learn about money – specially since we use cards so often at the store!

I tend to use cash these days if I can, because that way you don’t have to keep the receipts. Taking out just the right amount for a weeks budget. As for the money squirreled away in silly places in our house, I just wondered how it got to be so much. 🙂
